AERMOD, the preferred model of the U.S. EPA for near-field air dispersion modeling, requires the use of two meteorological files: the surface (.SFC) and profile (.PFL) files. Acquiring data, verifying the quality, and processing it into a model-ready state can be a costly, time-consuming process. While many sites may offer "free" data to use in the AERMET meteorological processor, this data is often very old and not preferred by most regulators.
Why worry about the liability of handling unfamiliar, out of date data?
BREEZE meteorologists can provide you with AERMOD-ready datasets that are checked and quality assured according to U.S. EPA standards. Our staff will help you identify the most appropriate stations for your projects and even fill the data according to the best standards to ensure that you get the most of our dataset.
AERMOD also requires a land use profile of the region that is being modeled. You can choose to either generate this land use profile yourself or allow the staff of meteorologists at BREEZE to generate it for you. Our staff uses the latest version of AERSURFACE for all projects within the United States, and they are trained to properly identify land use characteristics for other locations.
CALPUFF utilizes meteorological data from a prognostic meteorological model which necessitates more expertise and greater processing resources than models such as ISCST3 or AERMOD. Our experience with CALPUFF and MM5 data distinguishes us by providing clients with a viable, cutting-edge alternative to traditional, less sophisticated meteorological data sets that may produce overly conservative modeling results. BREEZE meteorologists use MM5 predictions from an accepted data set that has a resolution of 36 kilometers. The tighter resolution better accounts for meteorological changes associated with variations in terrain, therefore provides more precise meteorological parameters than MM4 data offers. CALPUFF’s more accurate characterization of atmospheric dispersion, especially with MM5 data, can lead to less conservative modeling results than other models provide. This increased accuracy maximizes operational flexibility for facilities that may face regulatory barriers when using conservative and restrictive models like ISCST3 and AERMOD.
REQUIREMENTS: Preparing meteorological data for CALPUFF modeling is extremely time-intensive due to the numerous processing steps involved and very large data files. However, our extensive database of readily available data, worldwide resources for data acquisition, computing infrastructure, and professional staff of meteorologists allow us to bring you available data in a timely manner.
REGULATORY USE: With the regulatory approval of CALPUFF, many regulators are requiring applicants to utilize this model as the sole means of quantifying Class I area air impacts. This requirement poses a challenge for industry, as the CALPUFF modeling system requires considerable expertise and computing resources to execute, and its complexity can delay the permitting process. The BREEZE team’s dedicated staff is available to obtain and process the extensive meteorological data needed to generate the meteorological input files for CALPUFF. This can be done for any number of surface and upper air sites over any domain size and resolution.

BREEZE meteorologists can provide you with data from the MM5 model for use in a variety of applications. Our library includes data across the entire globe at 36-km resolution and from recent years (post-2000). The tighter resolution better represents meteorological changes associated with variations in terrain and therefore provides more precise meteorological parameters than older data versions.
These data are often run through the CALMM processors for use in the CALMET meteorological preprocessor for CALPUFF. CALPUFF's more accurate characterization of atmospheric dispersion when MM5 data is used can lead to less conservative modeling results than other models provide.
BREEZE meteorologists also have the capability of generating AERMOD-ready data for locations around the globe by using the MM5 model data. Even if you are modeling in a remote location where supporting data are unavailable, MM5 model data make it possible for you to run sophisticated models such as AERMOD or CALPUFF.
BREEZE possesses the infrastructure, expertise, and required raw data to create custom mesoscale datasets for locations worldwide.
BREEZE meteorologists can review your custom meteorological data for a wide range of applications. Whether you need data processed for use in an air quality model or you're in need of trained meteorologists to perform a quality assurance analysis on your raw data, BREEZE can help you.
Most commonly this involves you providing us with raw data from an on-site tower or other network of observations and we process the data for input to air quality models. We will work with your data set to ensure it is correctly formatted and the most complete prior to processing. Even if you are not doing a dispersion modeling analysis, our professional meteorologists can assist with the review and QA/QC of any set of data.
Our wealth of knowledge and extensive history in working with meteorological data make BREEZE the best choice for your custom meteorological data needs.
