How to Choose the Correct Model

How to choose the correct model.

With all the different modeling applications, how does someone choose the correct one?

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing the appropriate model to use for a particular situation. These factors include, but are not limited to:

  • Type of release
  • Whether or not there are obstructions to windflow that might cause a plume to descend (namely building downwash)
  • Location of what is considered ambient air
  • Whether or not there are significant complex wind flows such as stagnation, land-sea interfaces, channeling, etc.
  • And the availability of meteorological data

You’ll need to ask some questions before selecting a model.

  • Perhaps the most obvious one is “Why do you need to do the modeling in the first place?” Is it for regulatory reasons? Research? Expert testimony?
  • You’ll need to know if the emissions that are being modeled are originating from a continuous source or from one that is not normally released, such as a ruptured pipe.
  • What is the density of the release? Is the effluent buoyant, neutrally buoyant, or dense? Dense gas emissions often result from refrigerated or highly compressed containers and disperse differently from neutrally buoyant releases.
  • How far out from the release are concentrations to be calculated? Many models have limitations on the distance that they can compute concentrations for.
  • How soon do you need the results? Sophisticated numerical models that take into account complex chemical reactions can take greater than real-time to complete a run. Most U.S. EPA models used for regulatory applications are designed to be robust and run relatively fast.
  • What level of accuracy do you require?
  • What type of meteorological data is available, if any? Representative data is not always available for the location that is being modeled or for the period of interest.
